Shannon Greenwood, who graduates this June, was nominated as the 2013 UBC Grad who’s most likely to change the world!
The winner will be featured on the cover of UBC Reports and receive complimentary regalia rental for spring congregation, courtesy of UBC Ceremonies & Events; and a diploma frame, courtesy of UBC Alumni.
Shannon is from the rural island of Haida gwaii. She left this island and moved her family to Vancouver to become a midwife four years ago so she could bring birth back to her community one day. She has continued to work with the government to work on getting ‘well women’ care and addressing all the stages of conception to birth for the many burgeoning families that populate this island. Traditionally these women have had to leave their territory for healthcare in the nearest tertiary centre. Shannon has been very committed to her community and has made tremendous sacrifice to relocate her three children and family to gain this UBC degree. She is graduating this year and continues to work on reform for this primarily first nations community to access the services that its citizens deserve. Her commitment to helping others is big and her heart is large to see.
We’re all rooting for you, Shannon!
