Vancouver Fraser Medical Program – Fraser Medical Cohort Year 3 Clinical Clerkship

Building on the success of the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program, where students study and learn in the Vancouver and Fraser regions, starting in 2021, students can choose to do their Year 3 Clinical Clerkship rotations in the Fraser region.

Students accepted into the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) will have the opportunity to select the Fraser Medical Cohort on their application during the 2021/2022 application cycle. If invited to interview, applicants will now have the choice of selecting from 5 sites on their binding Site Preference Form. Students admitted into the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program and having selected the Fraser Medical Cohort on their binding Site Preference Form will remain with the other Vancouver Fraser Medical Program students for Years 1 and 2 in Vancouver but will undertake their Year 3 Clinical Clerkship training in the Fraser region in 2024-25. Assignments for specific clinical clerkship locations within this region would be based on capacity.

What is the Fraser Medical Cohort Year 3 Clinical Clerkship?

  • It is a 32-student cohort within the existing Vancouver Fraser Medical Program class of 192 students, allowing students to choose to do their Year 3 Clinical Clerkships primarily in the Fraser region.

Where would we do Years 1 and 2?

  • Students would remain with the other students based in Vancouver for Years 1 and 2 and complete their Year 3 Clinical Clerkships in the Fraser region.

What is a clinical clerkship?

  • A clinical clerkship is Year 3 of the MD Undergraduate Program, which includes clinical rotations such as emergency medicine, surgery, ambulatory medicine, OB/GYN, pediatrics, psychiatry, anesthesia, orthopedics and rural family medicine.

Will this add any additional cost or reduce choices for students?

  • The Fraser Medical Cohort will be cost neutral for medical students.

If I choose the Fraser Medical Cohort on admission to UBC, can I change my mind?

  • Students who are admitted to the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program – Fraser Medical Cohort are subject to existing policies on student transfer.

Can I apply for an Integrated Clinical Clerkship if I am a part of the Fraser Medical Cohort?

  • Yes.

If I am not selected for, or do not choose, the Fraser Medical Cohort, can I still complete a Year 3 Clinical Clerkship in the Fraser region?

  • The clinical placement will be based on capacity for specific clinical clerkships. Clinical departments determine capacity based on availability of teaching faculty.
