On March 9th, 2013, UBC medical and dental students lit up the Chan Centre stage with a spectacular array of performances at the 19th Annual Spring Gala. After months of choreography and rehearsal, students showed off their remarkable talents in music, dance, comedy, and more. This year’s Spring Gala featured 175 performers in 24 performances. Highlights of the evening included a delightful rendition of I want you back by Jennifer Kalil, Kyla Leung, Matthew Michaleski, and Graeme Hintz, complete with finger-snapping charm and flashing lights. Alma Bencivenga, Esther Warkentin, and Azadeh Arjmandi surprised us with the most harmonious cat fight in their musical piece, Duetto Buffo di due Gatti. The UBC Med/Dent Bhangra Group and the hip-hop team P Minus were the two biggest dance acts, and they never fail to hype up the audience with their explosion of energy and wild moves. Of course, the Spring Gala would not be complete without a final performance by the graduating class of 2013. In a medley of song and dance, fourth year students celebrated their battles, achievements, and friendships, as well as the new adventures ahead.
The Spring Gala Organizing Committee would like to thank all who attended the Spring Gala and helped to raise money in support of the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation. They are dedicated to the prevention of depression-related suicide in youth, through mental health care, education, and research.
We also express sincere gratitude to all who helped in the production of the Spring Gala, especially Dr. Andrew Seal, colorectal surgeon and previous Dean of Student Affairs, who founded the Spring Gala 19 years ago and continues to be a passionate supporter of the arts in medicine.
