MD/PhD Program

The integrated MD/PhD program is offered jointly by the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Graduate Studies and is designed for students who want to pursue a career as clinician-scientists. This program provides highly-qualified students with the opportunity to combine their medical school experience with intensive scientific training. The program enables students to receive dual MD/PhD degrees after seven years of study.

The program is based on the regular MD curriculum, but is customized to meet the unique career goals of individual students, based on their background, previous research experiences and chosen medical fields of expertise. Graduates of the MD/PhD program are trained as competent physicians as well as skilled scientists who can sustain successful and competitive clinical investigative careers.

Applicants to the MD/PhD program must apply to both the MD program and the MD/PhD program. In order to be eligible, at the time of admission students must have completed a BSc degree with first-class standing (or equivalent), and have fulfilled all the requirements of acceptance into the MD program, as well as the doctoral requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The MCAT is required, but the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional.

Potential candidates must be independently selected by the MD Admissions Selection Committee prior to or concurrent with their acceptance in the MD/PhD program. Application to the MD/PhD program should be submitted to the MD/PhD program office. For further information, please contact (604) 822-7198 or email ubcmdphd@exchange.ubc.ca.
